Make a private call (beta)

Private calls (beta) are end-to-end encrypted 1-to-1 calls, with a safety code you can compare.

What it is

A private call is a one-to-one call where your voice is encrypted on your device and only unlocked on the other person’s device. KeyUp’s servers pass the audio along without being able to hear it. Private calls are in beta: new and still being tested, so they aren’t guaranteed yet. Don’t rely on them for sensitive conversations until they’ve been independently reviewed.

When to use it

Use it for one-to-one calls you’d like kept between the two of you, on the Android app or your watch. Room calls can’t be private, and the web app doesn’t offer private calls yet.

How to do it

  1. Tap the call button for a person (on the People tab, in the Friends list, or at the top of a direct message). Pick Private call. It says End-to-end encrypted. No recording, transcripts or AI.

    Choose Call or Private call.

  2. The call screen shows a lock and Private call. When the other person answers, a Safety code appears, like 936 671.

  3. Read the code to each other. Tap the Safety code row to show it large. The screen says Compare this code with the other person’s name. If it matches, nobody else can listen.

  4. If the codes are different, tap Codes don’t match. The call ends. Try again later, or call normally if the conversation isn’t sensitive.

  5. On your watch, private calls ring and can be answered too. The watch shows Private call while it rings and the safety code once you’re connected. To start one from the watch, swipe up, tap Call someone, pick a person, then Private call.
