Save battery on your phone and watch
Open mic is best on the phone. On the watch, use Tap or the crown, and let open mic pause itself.
What it is
How you talk makes the biggest difference to battery. Hold, Tap and crown talk only use the mic while you talk. Open mic keeps a microphone running the whole time, which keeps the device awake.
When to use it
Read this before a long shift, or if your watch runs low before the day is over.
How to do it

On the watch, use Tap or the crown for a full shift. Waiting in a room with the screen off uses little battery.

Crown talk with the screen off keeps your watch ready to listen for the crown, which uses some extra battery while you’re in a room. If you only use the crown with the screen on, turn off Crown works with the screen off (watch: swipe up to Crown; phone: You › Watch). The crown then works while the screen is on or dimmed.

Need hands-free all day? Use open mic on your phone, which has a much bigger battery, and keep the watch for the crown. Choose who talks and who listens in You › Devices › Talk and listen.

Let open mic pause itself. In You › Sound › Your voice › Pause open mic after, pick 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The mic pauses when the room has been quiet that long, and you still hear the room. See Pause open mic when nobody talks.

Talk on watch, listen on phone saves battery on both: the phone’s mic stays off and the watch doesn’t play the room while your phone is with you.
