Radio Bridge licenses: talk or listen-only

Talking to the radio needs an FCC business radio license that we check first. Without one, a bridge is listen-only.

US only for now. KeyUp to radio (the radio transmits what people say in KeyUp) needs a current FCC Part 90 Industrial/Business license. Radio to KeyUp (listen-only) works with any radio and needs no license, because nothing is transmitted.

Add your license (owners and admins)

Web app

  1. Open the dispatch console › Radio license › Add your license.
  2. Enter the call sign, the 10-digit FRN, the licensee name exactly as it appears on the license, whether you are the licensee or an authorized user, the frequency the gateway will transmit on, and where the gateway will be.
  3. Confirm each statement and choose Submit for review. Until it is approved, your bridges stay listen-only.
  4. We check the license in the FCC’s license database (ULS): it must be Active, match the name and FRN, be an Industrial/Business license, and include the frequency. Approved: turn on KeyUp to radio in the bridge’s settings.

Which radios can do what

  1. Business radio (Part 90 Industrial/Business): talk and listen, after the license is approved.
  2. GMRS, FRS and MURS: listen-only. FCC rules don’t allow these radios to relay audio from the internet.
  3. Amateur (ham): listen-only. Ham radio can’t carry business traffic or messages from people who aren’t licensed hams.
  4. Public Safety: not available yet. Write to [email protected].
