Mute a person, chat or room

Take a break from one person’s voice, a busy chat or a room, for 1 hour, 8 hours or until you unmute. Nobody is told.

What it is

Muting is just for you, and nobody is told. Mute a person and you don’t hear their voice in any room, and if you choose, their messages stop notifying you. Mute a chat room or direct chat and it stops notifying you. Mute a walkie room and you choose what goes quiet: its Chat, its Audio, or Both.

When to use it

Use it when one person is noisy for you, a chat is busy, or you need a quiet hour.

How to do it

  1. A person: tap them in a room or on the People tab to open their sheet. Under Mute (name) for you, turn on Also silence their messages if you want, then pick 1 hour, 8 hours or Until I unmute.

  2. While a person is muted, you don’t hear their voice in any room, and their name shows Muted for you when they talk. If you silenced their messages too, the messages still arrive and count as unread, just without a notification or sound.

  3. A chat room or direct chat: long press it in the list, or open it, tap the options button and turn off Notifications. Then pick how long.

  4. A walkie room: long press it on the Talk tab, tap the bell at the top of the room, or open Room settings › Notifications. Choose Chat, Audio or Both (Both is picked for you), then pick how long.

  5. Chat stops the room’s message notifications and sounds. Unread counts still show. Audio stops the room’s voice when you only listen to it as your second room, on every device, along with its voice alerts. Both does both.

  6. The room you’re in still plays, even with Audio muted, because you chose to be there. Its talk screen shows Audio muted. It still plays while this is your room. with an Unmute button, so you can switch it back on in one tap.

  7. Muted rooms and chats show a small crossed out bell in the lists. To unmute, open the same place and tap Unmute. Timed mutes end by themselves.
